Aprašymas

SS-Panzerjäger-Abteilung 54 (later re-designated 23) fought for the majority of its two-year existence against the Red Army on the northern sector of the Eastern Front. By late 1944 the battalion had effectively ceased to exist as a battle-worthy formation and was withdrawn for reconstitution. Initially a formation intended to be manned by Dutch personnel, due to losses suffered during the months of attritional battles in Estonia, by early 1945 it could boast only one "all Dutch" crew. After the unsuccessful Operation Sonnenwende in February 1945 the battalion's decimated units would fight their final battle in order to surrender to the Western allies.

This little-researched armored unit is generally overshadowed by its more famous peers in the "classical" or "premier" armored formations of the Waffen-SS. The glorious days of whirlwind armored advances had given way to stalemate, followed by grueling attritional defensive action and the long retreat to the shrinking borders of the Reich. To tell the story of this battalion requires exploring the history of its members--their motivations and their flaws, as an armored vehicle was merely just that without the human beings who lived--and in many cases died--within its steel hull.
